The Writer's Retreat was a first year university project located on Brownsea Island. The retreat maximised space by using three staggered volumes to divide the space. Large openings make use of the views out over the surrounding harbour.
The roof slopes up to the north to allow north light in from behind the hill that the retreat backs onto. Long horizontal windows look out to the east and west capturing views of the sunset and sunrise.
Mechanical shutters reduce solar gain during peak times whilst also acting as a shading from above when open. A timber frame which Douglas fir rebated horizontal cladding tie the retreat in with the natural surroundings of Brownsea island.
